Average stress makes the load-to-area relationship visible.
The simplest concentric compression screen divides the axial load by the gross rectangular area. The comparison value must come from the appropriate material, code, and project design basis.
Governing relationship
For a gross area A = bh, the average stress is σ = N / A. With N in kN and dimensions in mm, the result is numerically in MPa.
Do not mistake stress for resistance.
- Check slenderness, second-order effects, buckling, imperfections, eccentricity, biaxial bending, and connection or end conditions separately.
- For reinforced concrete, check reinforcement, confinement, cracking, durability, fire, detailing, and the applicable design code.
- For steel, timber, or other materials, use the correct resistance model and material properties rather than reusing an arbitrary allowable value.
