How do you size a full-flow pipe with Manning?

When target flow, slope, and roughness are known, the full-pipe Manning relationship can provide a first internal-diameter estimate.

Make the full-flow assumption explicit.

The inverse relationship treats the circular pipe as flowing full and carrying gravity flow. This is useful for a first sizing pass, but it does not say that the pipe will operate full in the field.

How the diameter appears in the equation.

For a full circular section, A = piD2/4 and R = D/4. Substituting those relationships into Manning gives a flow proportional to D8/3. Rearranging gives the direct diameter estimate used by the calculator.

Keep hydraulic and procurement decisions separate.

  • The result is an internal hydraulic diameter, not an outside diameter, nominal pipe designation, or product selection.
  • Choose the next suitable commercial size, then re-run the known-diameter capacity and partial-flow checks.
  • Confirm slope, roughness, cover, bedding, joints, access, inlet control, outlet control, tailwater, and hydraulic grade line.

When full-flow sizing is not enough

Storm drains and gravity sewers are commonly designed with partial-flow criteria, self-cleansing requirements, surcharge checks, and downstream controls. Pressurised systems require a different energy and pump-system model.
