Hong Kong resistance checks: what these three screens actually cover.

Three bounded calculators now carry a declared Buildings Department basis. Their value is the visible boundary around each result, not the suggestion that a section screen is a complete design.

Concrete: a rectangular singly reinforced beam.

The Hong Kong RC beam flexure calculator uses the Code of Practice for Structural Use of Concrete 2013 (2020 Edition). It is restricted to a normal-proportion rectangular beam, 20–45 MPa concrete, 500 MPa tension reinforcement, no axial force, no compression steel, and no redistribution above 10%.

The screen balances the reinforcement tension force against the equivalent concrete compression block, then reports:

The displayed code anchors are HKCC clauses 2.4.3.2, 3.2.3, 3.2.6, 6.1.2.1, and 6.1.2.4(a)–(c), Equations 6.1, 6.7, 6.8, 6.10–6.12, Table 9.1, and clause 9.2.1.3.

Concrete shear: an ordinary beam region with vertical links.

The Hong Kong RC beam shear calculator implements the ordinary beam-region route in clause 6.1.2.5. It exposes the applied shear stress, Table 6.3 concrete contribution, Table 6.2 minimum or designed vertical-link ratio, the maximum shear-stress limit, and the 0.75d longitudinal-spacing screen.

The shear anchors are Equation 6.19, Tables 6.2 and 6.3, and the associated clause 6.1.2.5 beam provisions. The page excludes enhanced resistance near supports, axial force, prestress, bent-up bars, torsion, discontinuity regions, and transverse detailing.

Steel: three independent resistances.

The Hong Kong steel section resistance calculator uses the Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel 2011 (2023 Edition). It accepts verified gross area, plastic modulus, elastic modulus, shear area, design strength, and declared Class 1 or Class 2 status for a rolled doubly symmetric I/H section.

The displayed steel anchors are clauses 3.1.2, 4.1/Table 4.1, 7.1–7.2/Table 7.1, 8.1, 8.2.1, 8.2.2.1, 8.6.1, 8.7.5, and 8.9.1. The entered py must come from the applicable material standard or the Code Tables 3.2–3.6; it is not automatically inferred from a grade label.

How to read the result.

  • WITHIN SCOPE means the entered actions do not exceed the displayed subset resistances and every visible release gate passes.
  • REVIEW means an action exceeds resistance, a material or geometry limit fails, the steel low-shear condition fails, or a coupled interaction is present.
  • The steel page intentionally reports axial, moment, and shear utilisation separately. Axial force plus bending requires the relevant interaction check and is not certified by these independent percentages.
  • The RC flexure and shear pages remain separate checks. A passing pair still does not verify load combinations, anchorage, crack control, deflection, durability, fire, construction details, or the complete member.

Amendment record.

The concrete source set is the 2020 Edition plus the February 2022, June 2023, and April 2024 amendment sheets. Each calculator identifies its narrower clauses; April 2024's strut-and-tie system route and deep-beam wording remain outside these normal-beam screens.

The steel source set is the 2023 Edition plus the April 2026 amendment sheet. That sheet addresses material-definition clarification, welding, vibration, connections, and composite-column provisions; it does not change the selected Section 7 classification or Section 8 section-resistance equations.

Checks deliberately left out.

These pages do not cover load generation or combinations, member buckling, lateral-torsional buckling, torsion, shear buckling, Class 3/4 effective properties, holes and connections, composite action, fatigue, fire, durability, construction sequence, serviceability, or professional submission requirements. These omissions are part of the product boundary and should not be filled by hidden assumptions.
