L-section properties calculator.

Calculate gross area, centroid, centroidal Ix and Iy, four extreme-fibre section moduli, and radii of gyration for a sharp-cornered angle section.

read the result

An angle section is unsymmetric in both directions.

The vertical and horizontal legs place the centroid away from the outer corner. Because the section is not symmetric about either centroidal axis, each extreme fibre has its own section modulus.

Governing equations

The gross area is formed from the vertical rectangle and horizontal rectangle minus their overlapping corner: A = twD + Btf - twtf. The centroid and centroidal inertias follow by the composite-area method and parallel-axis theorem.

The calculator reports Ztop = Ix/ȳ, Zbottom = Ix/(D - ȳ), Zleft = Iy/x̄, and Zright = Iy/(B - x̄), with x̄ measured from the left and ȳ from the top.

Use gross properties carefully.

  • The legs are orthogonal, centred at the corner, and have constant thicknesses.
  • Fillets, radii, holes, welds, tapers, reinforcement, cracking, and effective properties are not included.
  • For unsymmetric bending, coupling through the product of inertia and the actual principal axes may need a separate analysis.
