Connection-plate input guide
Enter the critical ply thickness, steel grade, nominal bolt diameter, end distance and hole coefficient. Independently determine the effective strip width and the bolt-to-restraint lever arm. These two values control bending and are not automatically justified by the calculator.
The displayed utilisation is a demand/resistance comparison for the named model, not a percentage of overall connection safety. A zero-demand result does not prove that the physical joint is adequate. Independently check the joint load path and the omitted connection modes before use.
Worked workbook example
A 6 mm S275 plate, four 10 mm bolts and 30 mm end distance carries 142.45 kN shear. Per-bolt demand = 35.6125 kN; governing bearing = 27.6 kN, utilisation 129.0%. With zero tension, the 113 mm strip and 55 mm arm give Z = 678 mm³ and zero bending demand—not evidence of whole-plate adequacy.
Calculation interpretation
Bearing compares two source capacities. Bending uses the elastic rectangular strip modulus, not a yield-line or plastic end-plate solution. Adding tension increases the per-bolt strip moment through the entered lever arm.
Assumptions and limitations
No plate shear, net section, block shear, buckling, bolt pitch/edge compliance, support flexibility, prying, fatigue or full plate assembly design. Source strength reductions are disclosed for independent material verification.
