calculation basis
Minimum cover is not nominal cover.
Concrete cover is the distance from the reinforcement surface nearest the concrete face to that face. Where a shear link is outermost, the entered beam cover is measured to that link surface, not the main-bar centre. The bond-cover requirement must still reflect the actual reinforcement arrangement; it is not automatically satisfied by entering the link diameter.
The tool first determines the durability minimum from the selected exposure and structural class, or from a separately verified National Annex value. It then applies the entered durability adjustments, compares with the verified bond minimum and the 10 mm floor, and adds the entered execution deviation once. A larger fire or project nominal minimum may govern afterward. No automatic rounding or favourable class reduction is applied.
Input guidance
- Exposure: assess each face and every relevant environment. The tool supports the corrosion exposure groups in Table 4.4N, not a full EN 206 concrete specification.
- Structural class: establish design life, concrete strength, geometry and execution control using the applicable project rules before selecting S1–S6. S4 is an example reset, not a design declaration.
- Durability basis: use the manual minimum-cover override when the applicable National Annex table differs. Do not enter a nominal cover into the minimum-cover field.
- Bond and deviations: all values are in mm. The verified bond minimum must account for the actual bar arrangement; reductions and execution deviations require a documented basis.
- Other nominal minimum: enter a separately verified governing nominal requirement, including any fire requirement. Zero does not mean fire resistance has been assessed.
Worked example: XC3 / S4
For the recommended Table 4.4N value, XC3 with structural class S4 gives cmin, dur = 25 mm. Take an independently verified cmin,b = 25 mm, all durability adjustments zero and Δcdev = 10 mm. Then cmin = max(25, 25, 10) = 25 mm and cnom = 25 + 10 = 35 mm. If the project requires 40 mm nominal cover, the governing entered requirement becomes 40 mm. These are example values, not a project-specific recommendation.
Interpretation and common mistakes
The output is a cover requirement for the entered basis, not a durability or construction approval. Increasing cover reduces effective depth when section dimensions are unchanged; return to the beam calculator and recalculate all affected checks. Common errors are using nominal cover as cmin, dur, adding execution deviation twice, confusing cover with bar-centre distance, assuming S4 or a reduction is universal, and overlooking different exposure on another face.
Assumptions and limitations
This is a reinforcing-steel helper for the declared first-generation building standard. It does not determine structural class automatically, assess fire axis distance, derive bundle/bond requirements, specify concrete composition, verify prestressing, or establish abrasion/chemical/freeze-thaw provisions. No EN 1992-2 bridge approval or automatic Hong Kong highway adoption is implied. Check the applicable national publication and project specification independently.
Verified reference material
The recommended numerical Table 4.4N values are cross-checked against the European Commission JRC Eurocode 2 background and worked examples, Table 1.4.2 (PDF page 27). The JRC examples identify that national tables can differ. The helper reports §4.4.1 clause references, not invented equation numbers; verify detailed bond and adjustment provisions in your licensed standard and applicable National Annex.
