Two measured areas can frame a site quantity.
The average-end-area method estimates the volume between adjacent sections by multiplying their average area by the station spacing. It is useful for a transparent first quantity when the section basis is known.
Governing relationship
For areas A1 and A2 separated by L, the in-situ volume is V = L(A1 + A2) / 2. The optional planning allowance is shown separately as Vplan = V × (1 + allowance).
Do not hide material behaviour.
- Irregular terrain, rapidly changing sections, transitions, and end conditions may need closer stations or a different volume method.
- Bulking, shrinkage, compaction, moisture, unsuitable material, and haul classification are not inferred from the allowance.
- Confirm survey control, section chainage, and whether the areas are cut, fill, stockpile, or disposal quantities.
